Orem, Utah October 6, 2010

The Utah Student Association and Utah Valley University are hosting a debate between Gubernatorial candidates Governor Gary Herbert and Mayor Peter Corroon on October 6, 2010. The debate will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00pm at Utah Valley University in the Sorensen Student Center’s Grand Ballroom.  KSL –TV News’ Richard Piatt will moderate the debate.

At the debate students from across the state will have an opportunity to learn more about the candidate’s positions and priorities before they vote in November. This is a non-ticked event open to all students and community members.  Door will open at 11:00a.m.

The event will begin with an award ceremony for the 2010 College Bowl Voter Registration Drive. Following the ceremony, the debate will open with questions from the moderator. Student Body President will ask the candidates a question representing the concerns of their student body. There are many issues facing students in today’s tough economic climate. This debate will provide information about each candidate and help prepare students to cast their ballot in November.

The Utah Student Association is pleased to announce that David E. Smith has been selected by the Governor to serve as the 2010-2011 Student Regent.

David graduated from Utah Valley University in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in business management, and is currently enrolled in the econometrics master’s degree program at the University of Utah. At UVU, he served in several student government positions, including time as a student senator and the vice president of academics. He also has five years of experience as a manager at Best Buy. David Smith will replace Jeffrey Kinsel, a student at Southern Utah University who served in the role for the 2009-10 school year.
